So we were approaching the [beach] scene, and I was talking to the two guys and they were both really, really, really, really nervous. Partly because they’d never performed a sex scene in a film before, they’d hardly acted at all, I hadn’t directed a sex scene, just all around we’re all green as hell. But we get there and the one kid, Jharrel Jerome, who plays Kevin, he’d asked me, he said, ‘So, Barry, what is this scene?’ I was like, ‘It’s in the script. Exactly the scene.’ I’m just trying to make it chopping wood. And I go, ‘Jharrel, are you a virgin?’ He goes, ‘No I’m not a virgin.’ I was like, ‘Okay, was the person you lost your virginity to more experienced, with the same experience?’ He was like, ‘No, she was more experienced.’ I was like, ‘Was it a good experience?’ He said, ‘Yeah, it was, she was really kind.’ And now, I like the actor to sort of talk their way into the solution, I don’t wanna give it. So I got quiet, and he said, ‘Is this the first time Kevin has kissed another man?’ I said, ‘No, it’s not the first time Kevin has kissed another man.’ Then I got really quiet and I just watched him. And he said, ‘Is this the first time Chiron has kissed another man?’ I didn’t say anything, and he said, ‘Oh, it’s the first time Chiron has kissed anyone.’ I said, ‘Yes.’ And that’s what the scene became about.

I think about love on a scale from 1 to 10. Most of us find a 6 or 7, and that’s why we have divorce. It’s the truth. We settle for that 6 or 7. But I like to think Kevin is Chiron’s 10. He’s found that and he realizes that there’s no reason to settle for a 6 or a 7 because, “I know this person is my 10. Whether or not this person believes I’m his 10, I’m going to devote my life to this person entirely.” That’s why the line where he says, “You’re the only man that’s ever touched me,” for me, was the most amazing, most beautiful thing I’ve seen in cinema, period. Because that’s what we strive for as people, to find that one person because they’re there. If Kevin doesn’t feel that they should be together, Chiron is just going to die a miserable person because that’s his person and he won’t settle for anything else. #BodegaStrike: On February 2, 2017, Yemeni business owners across New York closed 1,000 bodegas and grocery stores from 12:00pm to 8:00pm in response to the Trump administration’s “Muslim Ban” executive order. This shutdown was a public show of the vital role these grocers and their families play in New York’s economic and social fabric. The community organized a rally at Brooklyn Borough Hall in downtown Brooklyn to pray together and share stories of how the Muslim ban has affected their families.
This was one of the greatest demonstrations of solidarity, love and positivity that I have ever seen. The energy was electric and contagious, I found myself smiling uncontrollably and having so much fun. I hope these photos show that Yemeni Americans are peaceful loving people who deserve to be given a chance at life in this country.
